U.S. Ambassador to evaluate aid distribution in Gaza, as Israel faces increasing pressure regarding its policies
The United States has taken a more active role in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Gaza, as Steve Witkoff, President Trump's special envoy, traveled to the region in late July and early August 2023. Witkoff's focus was on aid delivery and humanitarian issues, but his discussions with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also touched upon broader efforts, including ceasefire negotiations.
Witkoff visited Gaza aid distribution sites run by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), which provides over one million meals daily. His mission was to ensure that aid reached civilians rather than Hamas militants. The visit came at a critical time, as the humanitarian crisis in Gaza worsened, with images of sick and emaciated children drawing international outrage.
UN-backed experts reported that famine is unfolding in Gaza, and the Israeli offensive, now nearing its 23rd month, has claimed at least 60,249 Palestinian lives, most of them civilians, according to Gaza's health ministry. The international community is putting mounting pressure on Israel to agree to a ceasefire and allow the world to flood Gaza with food.
Canada and Portugal are the latest Western governments to announce plans to recognize a Palestinian state. Germany's Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul met with Netanyahu and expressed concern about the humanitarian disaster in Gaza, urging the Israeli government to act quickly, safely, and effectively to prevent mass starvation.
The visit occurred amidst considerable chaos, with many Palestinians killed or wounded when seeking aid. At least 58 Palestinians were killed late Wednesday when Israeli forces opened fire on a crowd attempting to block an aid convoy in Gaza. The civil defence agency reported that Israeli attacks across Gaza on Thursday killed at least 32 people.
The armed wing of the Palestinian militant group Islamic Jihad released a video showing Rom Braslavski, a German-Israeli hostage who was a security guard at the Nova music festival, one of the sites targeted in the October 2023 attack that sparked the Gaza war. Braslavski pleads for his release in the video.
Jameel Ashour, a resident of Gaza, lost a relative in a shooting incident involving Israeli troops and stacks of bullet-riddled corpses in Gaza City's Al-Shifa Hospital. Ashour claims that Israeli troops opened fire after people saw thieves stealing and dropping food, causing a hungry crowd to rush in hopes of getting some.
Witkoff is scheduled to visit Gaza on Friday to inspect distribution sites and secure a plan for delivering more food. However, talks in Doha between Israel and the United States broke down last week, and both delegations were recalled. It remains to be seen how these developments will impact Witkoff's mission and the broader efforts to bring an end to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
