US Puts Pressure on Hamas: New Mediator Proposal, Hostages' Release Demanded

- U.S. administration urges Hamas for discussions

Hey there! Let's dive into the ongoing Middle East conflict and the current pressure being exerted on Hamas.

The US administration is urging the Islamist group Hamas to jump on board with a new mediator proposal and instantly free several hostages. In a sternly worded statement, the National Security Council and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff made it clear: either Hamas releases the hostages immediately or they will face some serious consequences. Witkoff and other US delegates recently unveiled a revised proposal for a multi-week extension of the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas at a meeting with mediators in Qatar.

This proposal would see Hamas releasing live hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners, including an American-Israeli dual national. Israel, in turn, would allegedly allow humanitarian aid into Gaza.

However, Hamas has only partially accepted this deal so far, initially agreeing to hand over only one live hostage—the Islamist organization announced they would release the American-Israeli dual national, as well as the bodies of four dead hostages. The Israeli government deemed this offer inadequate and manipulative.

Not impressed, the US also voiced its displeasure: "Hamas regrettably has chosen to publicly express flexibility while privately making completely unrealistic demands without a lasting ceasefire. Hamas is counting on time being on its side, but it isn't," the statement read. If Hamas doesn't comply soon, the US will "take appropriate action."
