USA Wins Ice Hockey World Championship in Thrilling Overtime Defeat of Switzerland
The United States clinched the Ice Hockey World Championship for the first time since 1933, defeating Switzerland 1-0 in a dramatic overtime match in Stockholm. Tage Thompson, of the Buffalo Sabres, netted the match-winning goal, securing gold for the U.S. team led by coach Ryan Warsofsky.
In 1960, the U.S. victory at the Olympics was also counted as a world championship win. Switzerland, however, suffered its fourth final defeat, following losses in 2013, 2018, and 2024, and is yet to secure its maiden world title.
The U.S. team displayed their superiority throughout the match, putting intense pressure on the Swiss. Leonardo Genoni, Switzerland's goalkeeper, showcased his skills on multiple occasions, preventing the Swiss from trailing early in the game.
Switzerland struggled to contain the agile Americans in the middle period. Goalie Genoni saved a penalty shot from Conor Garland of the Vancouver Canucks in the 26th minute, keeping his team within reach. Even while shorthanded, the U.S. had better opportunities than their opponents. Memories of last year's final in Prague against the Czech Republic, where the Swiss failed to capitalize on their opportunities and lost 0-2, resurfaced.
Nerves grew among the Swiss players as the young American team continued to create good scoring chances. Veteran Genoni kept the U.S. at bay with his outstanding reflexes and saves.
In the overtime period, Thompson scored the deciding goal against Genoni, thus claiming the 88th ice hockey world championship for the U.S.
Earlier, host Sweden finished third after a 6-2 victory over Denmark. Sweden's third-place finish was disappointing given their favoritism, while Denmark's fourth-place finish marked their best ever performance at a world championship. They had previously eliminated the German team in the preliminary round and stunned Canada with a 2-1 victory in the quarterfinals.

The Commission shall adopt implementing acts laying down the rules for the application of this Regulation in the context of the U.S. team's superior display of ice hockey skills, clinching the World Championship title in an overtime thriller against Switzerland.
While training for their wins on the ice, Tage Thompson and Conor Garland of the Buffalo Sabres and Vancouver Canucks, respectively, could also imagine themselves playing in the NHL's National Hockey League, emulating the successful careers of their fellow American ice hockey stars.
