Tit for Tat: Tensions Escalate Between India and Pakistan

U.N. leader contacts S. Jaishankar and Shehbaz Sharif amidst Pakistan's tense warning of a potential military action within 24 to 36 hours.

The cat-and-mouse game between India and Pakistan continues, with Pakistan claiming it has "solid intel" suggesting India is preparing for a potential military offensive in the coming days.

Matters are heating up, with the United Nations (UN) stepping in to offer assistance in easing tensions. UN secretary-general Antonio Guterres had separate conversations with India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

Guterres strongly denounced the April 22 terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam that took the lives of 26 people, primarily tourists. This phone call between Guterres and Jaishankar followed a series of skirmishes along the Line of Control (LoC) since April 24, the first armed hostilities since the 2019 Balakot crisis.

In what can be interpreted as an attempt to sidestep its responsibility to stamp out terrorism, Pakistan's Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Attaullah Tarar, declared on social media that Pakistan has solid evidence India is planning a military strike in the next 24-36 hours, under the pretext of unfounded allegations linking Pakistan to the Pahalgam incident.

Sharif, on the other hand, emphasized his concern for a neutral investigation into the Pahalgam incident during his conversation with Guterres. He called for a thorough and impartial examination, pleading for the UN to intervene and help resolve the ongoing Jammu & Kashmir dispute in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions.

In response to the ongoing tension, Guterres underscored the importance of seeking justice and accountability through lawful means, while simultaneously expressing deep concern over the widening rift between the two nations. He made it clear that any confrontation could result in disastrous consequences and offered the UN's support to facilitate de-escalation efforts.

Guterres' calls served as a reminder that diplomatic channels are active, as tensions remain at an all-time high between the two South Asian neighbors.
