Typhoon Makes Landfall in the East Sea During Early Part of the Year

It's all kicks off in Vietnam - Typhoon Wutip, the first of the year, has transformed from a tropical depression over the Hoàng Sa (Paracel) archipelago, into a full-blown typhoon on Wednesday morning.

Cause a Ruckus - Wutip is expected to unleash torrential rainstorms on the central and Central Highlands regions between Wednesday evening and Friday. The country best brace itself for this tropical onslaught.

Location, Location, Location - As of 7am on Wednesday, the typhoon's eye was situated near the Hainan Island in China, after making its way northwestward from the South China Sea. The storm is expected to move northeastward over the next few days, gradually weakening over land in southern China.

Wind Speeds and Waves - The typhoon has wind speeds reaching up to 110 km/h, with significant wave heights of about 7.6 meters.

Central Vietnam: Brace Yourselves - Storm Wutip has already caused severe flooding in parts of central Vietnam, particularly in Đà Nẵng, as a result of heavy rains from the outer bands of the storm. The storm is expected to bring heavy rains to central Vietnam, with potential for further flooding and landslides.

Warnings and Precautions - Residents in the Central and Central Highlands regions are advised to prepare for heavy rainfall and potential flooding, along with high winds. Authorities have issued flood and landslide warnings, urging caution and readiness for evacuation if necessary. Maritime activities in the region should be discontinued due to rough seas and strong winds.

Stay Informed and Prepared - To ensure safety, residents should monitor local weather updates, secure their homes, move valuables to higher ground, and have emergency supplies ready. Non-essential travel and outdoor activities should be avoided until the storm passes.

In the wake of the storm's destruction, Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính has instructed relevant ministries, agencies, and local authorities to take proactive measures, focusing on the safety of vessels, pre-emptive evacuation of high-risk areas, and securing critical infrastructure. The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment has also advised coastal provinces to manage and control the departure of vessels to sea and inform their owners of the storm's position, trajectory, and potential risks.
