Typhoon Danas will no longer trigger a T1 warning on Sunday afternoon as it moves away from Hong Kong.
**Typhoon Danas Heads Towards Taiwan, Poses No Further Threat to Hong Kong**
Typhoon Danas, named after the Tagalog word for "to experience" or "to feel," is expected to move towards the western coast of Taiwan in the vicinity of the Taiwan Strait. The Hong Kong Observatory has issued a very hot weather warning at 10.45am, encouraging residents to stay vigilant amidst the extreme heat.
As of 1 PM, Danas was approximately 460km east of Hong Kong, moving northeast at about 10km/h. The typhoon is forecast to continue this trajectory over the next day or so, influenced by competing steering currents from the Subtropical Ridge to the north and Near-Equatorial Ridge to the southeast.
Within approximately 36 to 72 hours, as ridging builds north of Danas, it is expected to make a sharp westward turn toward mainland China. This shift in steering currents will guide Danas on a west-southwestward track inland, where it will weaken and eventually dissipate within about four days.
Danas is expected to continue intensifying over the next 12–24 hours due to highly favorable conditions, including warm sea surface temperatures near 30°C, strong outflow, and low wind shear. However, interaction with the western coast of Taiwan and cooler waters will disrupt the storm's vortex and accelerate weakening as it moves westward.
The Hong Kong Observatory expects Danas to gradually move away from Hong Kong, skirting about 400 km east-southeast of the city before accelerating northeastward toward Taiwan, after which it poses no further threat to Hong Kong.
In light of the approaching typhoon, the Hong Kong Observatory has warned residents to be wary of the extreme heat. Temperatures across Hong Kong reached 34 degrees Celsius or above by noon. The Observatory has also cancelled all tropical cyclone warning signals at 2:20 PM.
