TYA's 'A Dream of Life' Breathes New Life into 'Obломov'

The Nizhny Novgorod Theater of Young Audience (TYA) presents an original interpretation of the classic novel 'Obломов', titled 'A Dream of Life'. The existential premiere challenges traditional perceptions of the 'superfluous man' character and features a new character, Obломov's mother, played by actress Anna Enskaya.

The adaptation shifts focus from the original novel, portraying Obломov as a modern young man, Igor Avrov, not ready to face life's problems. His relationship with Olga Ilyinskaya is starkly contrasted with his relationship with the widow Pshenitsyna. The production's design includes an enormous, composite couch that transforms into a cardiogram at the end. The director's interpretation suggests that Ilya fears the pain that strong feelings might bring, leading him to halt the development of his relationship with Olga.

The performance is filled with metaphors, some presented literally, while others remain unsolved mysteries for the audience to interpret. Despite extensive research, it remains unclear who officially took on the role of Obломov's mother in this unique production.

The 'A Dream of Life' adaptation of 'Obломov' offers a fresh perspective on the classic novel, challenging traditional perceptions and adding new characters. The production's design and director's interpretation add depth to the story. However, the identity of the actress playing Obломov's mother remains uncertain, as reliable information is not publicly available.
