Two Tauranga women killed in tragic Mt Maunganui landslide
Two women from Tauranga, Susan Knowles and Jacqualine Suzanne Wheeler, have died in the Mt Maunganui landslide. The pair were long-time friends who spent summers camping together at the popular beachside spot. Their deaths have left family and friends in mourning.
Knowles and Wheeler had a tradition of renting a caravan at Mt Maunganui for about a month each year. They were part of a close group of equestrian sports enthusiasts who gathered annually at the site.
Knowles worked as a property manager for EVES Real Estate. She had been involved in management and property ownership since her early 20s. Outside work, she enjoyed horse riding, mountain biking, and spending time with her tight-knit family. Friends remember her warm personality—she often greeted people with the phrase, 'How are you, blossom?' Alison Holtom, a friend, described her as 'an absolute delight' with a beautiful smile.
Wheeler was the founder of Colour Concepts, an interior design store. The two women shared a love for the outdoors and had been camping buddies for many years.
The landslide has cut short the lives of two women known for their friendship and community ties. Knowles and Wheeler’s annual summer trips to Mt Maunganui were a cherished routine. Their loss is felt deeply by those who knew them best.
