Two Powerful Hurricanes Humberto and Imelda Batter Bermuda and U.S. East Coast
Two powerful hurricanes, Humberto and Imelda, are set to bring heavy rain and dangerous surf to Bermuda and the eastern coast of the United States over the next few days.
Humberto, currently a Category 4 hurricane, will reach Bermuda on Tuesday, bringing heavy rain before moving northeast into the Atlantic. Meanwhile, Imelda, expected to strengthen into a Category 1 hurricane by Tuesday morning, is forecast to move northward close to the Florida coast without making landfall. It will bring rain and gusts up to 40 mph to Florida on Monday, with high surf alerts in effect from Florida to Virginia.
Imelda's biggest impact will be several days of dangerous surf and rip currents along the East Coast. Waves could reach 7 to 11 feet in Florida and Georgia on Monday and Tuesday, and 5 to 10 feet in the Carolinas and Virginia from Tuesday to Thursday. The rain from Imelda will also reach the Carolinas on Monday and Tuesday. By Wednesday evening, Imelda could approach Bermuda as a Category 2 hurricane before heading out to sea on Thursday morning.
While Imelda is not expected to make landfall in the United States, it poses a significant threat with life-threatening rip currents forecast for beaches along the East Coast. Residents and visitors are advised to exercise caution and follow local guidance.
