In a stunning turn of events, two WWII bombs have been unearthed in the bustling city of Kiel, forcing the evacuation of around 11,500 residents. The bombs, one of British and the other American origin, were discovered during routine survey work in the districts of Meimersdorf and Ellerbek-Wellingdorf.

A 250-kilogram British bomb was found in Dietrichsdorf, near a busy highway, causing the largest evacuation the city has seen in over a decade. The bomb disposal team has assessed that the bomb's body is in good condition, but a controlled partial explosion might be required during the defusing process to ensure safety.

Meanwhile, the American 250-kilogram bomb with two fuses lies on an agricultural field in Meimersdorf. The bomb disposal unit anticipates a smoother process due to the bomb's current condition.

With the upcoming defusing operations, around 3 dozen residents in Meimersdorf and around 1,300 residents in Ellerbek-Wellingdorf will have to vacate their homes. Road closures and railway line disruptions between Kiel and Hamburg will affect commuters, while replacement buses have been arranged. Passengers traveling to or from one of the cruise ships in the Kiel harbor should be contacted by their travel providers.

On Sunday, residents unable to find alternative accommodations can seek assistance at the voluntary fire brigade in Meimersdorf or the Ellerbek school. The police will close off roads in the affected areas, but the federal highway B502 (Ostring) will remain unaffected.

If you need help relocating temporarily, you can contact the Kiel fire brigade service telephone on 0431-5905 555. The number is reachable on Friday and Saturday from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM and on Sunday from 7:00 AM.

This incident in Kiel marks one of the largest recent efforts in Germany involving WWII-era unexploded ordnance. Similar to a recent event in Cologne, around 7,800 people were evacuated after a bomb was discovered during construction.

Stay tuned for more updates as the bomb disposal teams work to ensure the safety of the residents and restore normalcy in the city of Kiel.
