Two Mel Gibson-directed Jesus films set for release in the spring of 2027
Mel Gibson to Direct Two-Part Sequel to "The Passion of the Christ"
Mel Gibson is set to return to the director's chair for a highly anticipated sequel to his 2004 hit "The Passion of the Christ." Titled "The Resurrection of the Christ," the two-part film is scheduled for release in spring 2027, with Part One premiering on Good Friday, March 26, 2027, and Part Two on Ascension Day, May 6, 2027.
Gibson, known for his historical epics, will direct the film from a script he co-wrote with Randall Wallace, who also worked with him on "Braveheart." Lionsgate is partnering with Gibson's Icon Productions for the film's distribution.
Jim Caviezel, who played Jesus in the original film, is expected to reprise his role, along with other likely returning cast members such as Monica Bellucci as Mary Magdalene. Production is currently in pre-production and is expected to begin filming in Europe later this summer.
"The Resurrection of the Christ" is a sequel to Gibson's controversial 2004 film "The Passion of the Christ," which was criticized by many for its graphic violence and perceived antisemitism. Despite these criticisms, the film was a commercial success, grossing over $610 million worldwide.
Gibson reportedly funded "The Passion of the Christ" to the tune of $30 million with his own money. His latest film, "Flight Risk," starring Mark Wahlberg, was released in February. Gibson's last directorial effort was the war epic "Hacksaw Ridge," for which he received an Oscar nomination for Best Director in 2017.
"The Resurrection of the Christ" is described as a highly anticipated, epic, and awe-inspiring theatrical event intended to resonate widely, particularly given its alignment with Holy Week and Ascension Day release dates in 2027.
It is important to note that "Hacksaw Ridge" is not a sequel to "The Passion of the Christ" or "The Resurrection of the Christ," and "Flight Risk" is not related to the "The Resurrection of the Christ" sequels. Gibson's earlier film "Braveheart" is not a religious film.
Mel Gibson (69) is set to release two new films about Jesus in spring 2027. The production of "The Resurrection of the Christ" sequels is expected to begin in Europe later this year. Lionsgate's Adam Fogelson has praised Gibson as "one of the greatest filmmakers."
Mel Gibson's upcoming projects include the release of "The Resurrection of the Christ," a two-part sequel to his 2004 film, scheduled for spring 2027. This epic film falls under the category of movies-and-tv and entertainment.
Lionsgate, in partnership with Gibson's Icon Productions, is distributing "The Resurrection of the Christ," marking another collaboration between the two entities in the world of movies-and-tv.
