Two Jesus-themed films directed by Mel Gibson slated for release in the spring of 2027

In an exciting development for film enthusiasts, Mel Gibson is set to release two new films about Jesus Christ, titled "The Resurrection of the Christ." The two-part epic is scheduled for release in 2027, with Part One premiering on Good Friday, March 26, 2027, and Part Two on Ascension Day, May 6, 2027.

The plot of the movie is an epic portrayal of Jesus Christ’s resurrection and associated spiritual events, expanding on the biblical narrative beyond the crucifixion. The story focuses on the resurrection of Jesus Christ and covers significant biblical events such as the fall of the angels and Christ’s journey through other realms like hell. Mel Gibson, who is known for his devotion to his faith, described the script as somewhat like "an acid trip," and said it starts with the fall of the angels, introducing supernatural and otherworldly elements necessary to tell the resurrection story fully.

Gibson has been working on the screenplay for several years, collaborating with his brother Donal and Braveheart screenwriter Randall Wallace. The film will also feature de-aged actor Jim Caviezel reprising his role as Jesus Christ, as he did in Gibson's controversial crucifixion film from 2004, "The Passion of the Christ."

Lionsgate announced the release of "The Resurrection of the Christ" on Instagram, with the studio's chairman Adam Fogelson praising Gibson as "one of the greatest directors." The production of the films is expected to begin this year.

It's worth noting that Gibson's career has not been without controversy. The production of "The Passion of the Christ" was criticized for being anti-Semitic and for its graphic violence. However, the film grossed over $610 million worldwide, despite its R rating due to its brutality. Gibson also won two Oscars for the historical epic "Braveheart" in 1996 - Best Director and Best Picture.

Gibson's last directorial effort, the war epic "Hacksaw Ridge," was released nearly a decade ago in 2017. The director recently released the thriller "Flight Risk" with Mark Wahlberg in February.

As the release of "The Resurrection of the Christ" approaches, anticipation is growing among fans of Gibson's work and biblical epics alike. The films are expected to delve deeply into the spiritual and supernatural aspects of the resurrection story, providing a unique and potentially controversial take on one of the most significant events in Christian history.
