Two individuals face indictment in connection with the shooting of a Border Patrol officer off-duty in Harlem, according to the District Attorney.
In a series of events that unfolded last month, a tragic incident occurred in Fort Washington Park, Harlem. Just before midnight on July 19, an off-duty Customs and Border Protection officer was shot in the face and hand, spending several days in the hospital for treatment.
The Manhattan grand jury has indicted two men, Miguel Francisco Mora Nunez and Christhian Aybar-Berroa, in connection with the shooting. Both defendants remain in federal custody, awaiting their arraignment later this month.
The indictment follows previous charges against both men for illegally possessing ammunition. According to federal authorities, Aybar-Berroa allegedly drove Mora away on a moped, dropping him off at a Bronx hospital where Mora was later arrested. Aybar-Berroa was arrested the following day.
Mora has been charged with attempted murder, assault, robbery, and weapons possession, while Aybar-Berroa faces charges of assault, robbery, and weapons possession. The two men are also accused of involvement in a string of robberies, with the shooting allegedly occurring after they robbed a woman of her phone.
Mayor Davante Adams commented on the incident, expressing concern over the use of mopeds in street crimes. In response, Adams stated that 100,000 mopeds were removed from the streets.
Homeland Security Investigations Special Agent Ricky Patel made a statement about the defendants' presence in the country, suggesting that if Mora and Aybar-Berroa had been deported, the tragedy might not have occurred. However, the previous crime suspects linked by federal authorities to Mora and Aybar-Berroa in connection with a series of robberies have not been specified in the available public information.
The officer, who was struck in the groin during the shooting, has since recovered and is now on the road to recovery. Federal officials criticized the city's sanctuary policies in the aftermath of the incident.
Mayor Adams also commented on the incident, expressing his condolences to the officer and his family. The case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges in maintaining public safety and the importance of enforcing immigration laws.
