Two high-ranking immigration officials arrested at KLIA checkpoint during investigation
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has taken action against a counter setting syndicate believed to have been operating at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminals 1 and 2 since 2022.
In a series of operations, the MACC arrested several individuals, including two men in their 40s in Nilai and Johor Bahru on Monday. The exact number of individuals arrested and their identities have not been disclosed in the available sources.
Confirming the arrests, Pahang MACC director Shukor Mahmud stated, "The operations were conducted to address the activities of this counter setting syndicate, which is suspected of allowing foreigners to enter the country without proper checks, and allegedly involved in bribery and bypassing immigration checks."
The MACC seized a sum of cash during the operations and also froze several bank accounts belonging to the suspects. Shukor Mahmud is currently in the process of identifying other individuals who may have been involved in the syndicate.
The MACC's actions come after earlier operations aimed at clamping down on this counter setting syndicate, which has been active for several years. The commission has been working diligently to combat such corrupt practices related to airport operations.
The public is encouraged to cooperate with the MACC in their investigations and report any suspicious activities or information related to this case. The commission assures that all information will be treated with utmost confidentiality.
