Merkur Arena Modernization: Graz Stadium Set for Expansion and International Upgrades
The Merkur Arena in Graz is poised for a significant transformation, with plans to expand its capacity to 40,000 seats and modernize its facilities to meet FIFA and AFC regulations for hosting top-tier international matches, including UEFA Champions League fixtures.
The feasibility study for this expansion was completed by the end of May 2025, involving SK Sturm Graz, GAK 1902, and local authorities. While the exact dates for the completion of construction or the reopening of the expanded stadium have not yet been detailed, the project is moving forward after the study approval.
The city of Graz and the state of Styria will each contribute 40 million euros to the project, with SK Sturm contributing 10 million euros and securing corresponding rights in return. GAK, on the other hand, will not financially participate in the modernization and will instead focus on taking over the Weinzödl training center.
During the one-year construction period, both SK Sturm and GAK will have to use alternative stadiums. For international games, a reduced capacity of approximately 20,000 seats is planned. Discussions about restructuring adjacent properties, including the neighboring business center, are already underway.
Improvements to the VIP area, construction of sky boxes, and modernization of the press area are part of the modernization plan. The playing field of the Merkur Arena will be lowered during the renovation. The final expansion plans for the modernized Merkur Arena will be presented at the end of May or early June.
The goal of the modernization is to make the stadium suitable for international matches and Champions League games. This development aligns with SK Sturm Graz’s current status in Austrian football and ambitions in international competitions. For GAK, the modernization may present opportunities to attract larger audiences and increase revenue through improved facilities and international fixtures.
The Merkur Arena in Graz-Liebenau is scheduled for modernization, and the project is set to enhance the venue status for both SK Sturm Graz and GAK 1902, allowing them to host top-level matches and potentially increase their appeal and revenue opportunities through larger attendances and international fixtures.
The Merkur Arena modernization plans include accommodating other European sports, such as football, and enhancing the stadium's capacity to host games from renowned European leagues, as the facility aims to attract larger audiences and revenue opportunities.
With the prospect of hosting UEFA Champions League fixtures upon completion, the modernized Merkur Arena will also provide a platform for both SK Sturm Graz and GAK 1902 to showcase their capabilities in internationally competitive sports.
