Wildfires Ravage the Iberian Peninsula, Claiming Lives and Destroying Hundreds of Thousands of Hectares

The Iberian Peninsula is currently grappling with a severe wildfire crisis, with both Spain and Portugal experiencing devastating blazes. The fires have claimed at least 23 lives, including several firefighters, and have burned over 400,000 hectares in Spain alone, marking the worst wildfire season in over 30 years for the country.

In Spain, fires have destroyed more than 70,000 hectares of land in recent days, with the emergency services battling fires in the north-west and west of the country. The cause of a vehicle accident that led to the death of a firefighter in Castile and Leon remains unknown. Another tragedy occurred when a former mayor in Guarda, eastern Portugal, was killed fighting a fire on Friday. Portugal is also battling fires across the country, with the devastation already surpassing the 136,000 hectares destroyed by wildfire last year.

The heatwaves and droughts affecting the Iberian Peninsula have contributed significantly to the forest fires. Experts attribute the increase in temperatures to climate change. To combat the fires, approximately 2,000 firefighters were deployed in northern and central Portugal on Monday morning. Portugal is expecting the arrival of two water-bombing aircraft to aid ground teams.

Both Spain and Portugal have appealed to the European Union for assistance in putting out the fires. Although specific details about formal assistance requests from Spain or Portugal to the EU are not yet available, the scale of the wildfires—exceeding 1 million hectares burned across EU countries by mid-August—and the severity of the situation in the Iberian Peninsula strongly imply that EU support and cooperation in fire-fighting efforts and disaster response are likely involved or being coordinated, as is typical in such multinational crises.

Approximately half of the deployed firefighters in Portugal are focused on extinguishing fires in the town of Arganil. Since the start of the year, approximately 185,000 hectares of land have been destroyed by wildfire in Portugal, according to provisional data.

Our thoughts go out to the families and friends of those who have lost their lives in these tragic events. We will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as they become available.
