Two Die After Falling Through Lena River Ice in Yakutsk

Two men lost their lives after falling through the ice on the Lena River in Yakutsk. The first man's body was found on December 19, while the second was discovered three days later.

On December 12, two men fell through the ice on the Lena River between Yakutsk city and Tekhtyur village. Despite extensive search efforts, the first man's body wasn't found until December 19. His clothing was frozen to the ice, requiring a chainsaw for extraction. The second man's body was discovered by volunteers on December 21 and retrieved by a diver from the Yakutia Rescue Service.

The search, covering over 60,000 square meters, involved divers, underwater drones, and cameras. Temperatures ranged from -29°C to -42°C during the operation. The second man's body was found downstream, where it had been carried by the river's current.

The Yakutia Rescue Service has issued a warning against driving onto the ice before official ice roads are opened, emphasizing the risk to life. This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by thin ice during the winter months.
