Two blazes in Portugal, one of which led to a third confirmed death
In the heart of Portugal, firefighters are tirelessly working to combat two significant wildfires that have been raging for several days. The affected areas, located in the municipalities of Arganil (district of Coimbra), Sabugal (district of Guarda), and Mirandela (district of Bragança), continue to pose a challenge.
The fire in Arganil, with a "very large" perimeter, has kept over 1,500 firefighters on their toes. In addition, more than 500 vehicles and sixteen aerial means are being deployed to contain the blaze. The aim is to declare the fire under control by the end of the night. Regrettably, the fire has also claimed a life, as a 75-year-old man from Mirandela, district of Bragança, lost his life during the firefighting efforts. He was working for a company on behalf of the local municipality, and the fires are believed to be caused by ongoing forest fires in northern Portugal since late July 2025.
Meanwhile, in Sabugal, around 450 personnel, along with twelve-one vehicles and four aerial means, are working diligently to combat the fire. The conditions in Sabugal present the best chance to be declared under control by the end of the day. However, the fire has unfortunately claimed another life, this time a firefighter who died in a car accident while on duty.
Portugal is not fighting these fires alone. The country currently has 3,573 personnel, nearly 1,200 vehicles, and ten aerial means engaged in combating 36 rural fires across the nation. Two major fires have already been controlled, one in Montalegre, Vila Real, and one originating from Galicia, Spain.
The border region with Spain still has very low relative humidity and high temperatures, creating favourable conditions for new fires to develop. The authorities urge vigilance and caution as the battle against the wildfires continues.
