Bloody Relics of the Past: Unearthing Two World War II Bombs in Kiel

Discovered: Remnants of World War II Explosives Unveiled in Kiel, Germany - Two additional bomb discoveries made on aircraft in Kiel

Get ready, folks, because on Sunday, you might be packing your bags! Due to the upcoming defusing of two unloved relics from the Second World War, approximately 1,350 inhabitants of Kiel will have to bid temporary adieu to their homes and apartments. The hurtling missiles were discovered during ongoing investigations in the neighborhoods of Meimersdorf and Ellerbek-Wellingdorf, as the cops shared in the wee hours of the morning.

In Meimersdorf, about three dozen residents are in for a move. They'll have to vacate their domiciles from sunup until 8:00 AM. After that, roadblocks will be put in place. From 8:00 AM until the decontamination wraps up, the Kiel-Hamburg railway line will be off-limits in that area. Shuttle buses will be the preferred mode of transport for travelers that have cruises lined up in the Kiel harbor on Sunday. The travel providers should reach out to them about alternative arrangements.

The displaced residents who fail to secure temporary shelter can find refuge at the Meimersdorf Volunteer Fire Department on the village square from 7:00 AM. The American, 250-kilogram bomb has two fuses and currently rests on an open field. Given its condition, the bomb experts expect the operation to go off without a hitch.

Second Bombister

The fun doesn't stop with just one bomb, though! The second bomb in Ellerbek-Wellingdorf is expected to start raising Cain in the afternoon. The British, 250-kilogram bomb surfaced on a property situated near the southern end of the Stadtrat-Hahn-Park. Fingers crossed, the experts also expect smooth sailing for this one.

In the case of Ellerbek-Wellingdorf, around 1,300 residents will be forced to abandon their homes and allotment gardens within the quarantined zone by 12:00PM. The Stadtrat-Hahn-Park will be off-limits as well. The po-po will close off roads, but the federal highway B502 (Ostring) will remain unaffected. From 11:00 AM, classrooms at the Ellerbek School (Klausdorfer Weg 62-64) will be open for displaced individuals who can't find alternative lodging.

For those needing assistance in vacating their domicile, dial the Kiel Fire Department's service hotline at 0431-5905 555 during designated hours for both operations. The number operates Friday to Saturday from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM and on Sunday from 7:00 AM. And there you have it, folks! The grand show resumes on Sunday in good ol' Kiel!

However, authorities also had contingencies for a controlled partial explosion during the decontamination process if necessary.
