Suspected Hate Criminals in Hessian Cyberspace

Twelve individuals in Hesse under scrutiny for posting hateful content online - Twelve individuals under suspicion for expressed hate speech in Hesse region

In a proactive sweep aimed at cybercrime, police authorities have zeroed in on 12 suspects in Hessen, Germany. Accused of provocative speech, spreading hate, and derisive online commentary, these individuals hail from various parts of the state, including Frankfurt, Gießen, Marburg, and Wiesbaden.

In a joint announcement by the LKA (Hessian State Criminal Police Office) and the General Prosecutor's Office in Frankfurt, the duo outlined the suspects' alleged activities. The alleged offenses include inciting crime and hatred, alongside a series of insults intended for individuals in the digital realm. Several suspects have had run-ins with the authorities for similar misbehavior in the past.

The authorities' investigation reveals instances of a Facebook group urging the murder of others and supportive comments on a YouTube video advocating violence. Across Germany, the campaign swept up 65 search warrants, interrogating numerous suspects as part of the 12th nationwide action day against hate speech in all 16 federal states.

Focusing on politically motivated crimes, the offensive aimed to tackle hate postings deemed illegal, with the majority of cases attributed to the far-right spectrum. Despite the crackdown, hateful rhetoric persists, particularly within right-wing circles. Hesse's Interior Minister Roman Poseck conceded that radical and extreme groups continue to expand their reach, exploiting supposed easy solutions and conspiracy theories to infiltrate society. He added that these hated-filled voices aim to contaminate political and social discourse, ultimately eroding both the free democratic order and the community's harmony.

Hate crimes have seen a staggering increase in Hesse, with a 60% jump in 2022. Nearly 1,400 cases of propaganda, 523 incidents of hate speech, and 204 instances of insults characterized the year. Moreover, the tally of violent crimes rose by 22 cases to 70. Two-thirds of hate-related online postings stem from right-wing circles nationwide, with the rest attributed to left-wing, religious, and foreign ideologies, as well as unidentified parties.

The most common violations included hate speech, the endorsement of terrorist symbols, incitement to violence, and defamation through online postings. The number of hate crimes has seen a sharp increase year over year, with the figures more than quadrupling from 2021 (2,411 cases) to 2024 (10,732 cases). This pattern mirrors the practice known as "illuminating the dark field," where clandestine activities often go unnoticed until exposed.

The ongoing operation in Hessen is part of a broader, nationwide effort to quell the tide of hate within the online sphere, signifying the authorities' concerted attempt to maintain a safe, inclusive, and democratic atmosphere. The LKA encourages citizens to report any instances of online hate speech to the police or via anonymous channels, and to inform social media platforms to remove harmful content.

  1. The community is urged to report any instances of online hate speech to the authorities or via anonymous channels, as part of the broader, nationwide effort to combat hate within the digital realm and maintain a safe, inclusive, and democratic atmosphere.
  2. The employment policy within the LKA (Hessian State Criminal Police Office) and the General Prosecutor's Office in Frankfurt may need reevaluation, considering the frequent involvement of suspects with a history of similar misbehavior in their alleged activities related to hate speech and incitement to violence.
