Turkmenistan Unveils Tourism Potential at TurkmenTravel-2026 Forum in April
Turkmenistan is preparing to host the international forum TurkmenTravel-2026 from 14 to 17 April 2026. The event aims to showcase the country's untapped tourism potential, from Silk Road heritage to striking natural landscapes. Organisers expect over 100 foreign delegates alongside local experts to discuss innovation and cross-border travel opportunities.
The forum will feature specialised seminars, round-table discussions, and a scientific-practical conference focused on modernising tourism. Participants will include tour operators, airlines, hotel representatives, and specialists in cultural heritage and ecotourism. A key goal is to align tourism policies, improve promotional strategies, and develop cross-Caspian routes in collaboration with Kazakhstan's Aktau and Mangystau regions.
Turkmenistan has recently adopted a law introducing electronic visas and simplifying entry procedures for foreigners. The move seeks to boost tourism revenue and trade by making the country more accessible. Authorities are also promoting major attractions like the Darvaza Gas Crater—known as the 'Gate to Hell'—and the dramatic Yangykala Canyon, alongside UNESCO-listed sites such as Merv, Nisa, and Kunya-Urgench. President Serdar Berdimuhamedov has ordered the forum to be organised to high standards, highlighting Turkmenistan's rich heritage. The country boasts three UNESCO World Heritage cultural sites, including the Mausoleum of Sultan Sanjar in Merv, a renowned Seljuk-era monument. Additionally, its intangible cultural heritage, nomadic traditions, and ancient Silk Road connections are being promoted at international events like the ITB 2026 tourism fair.
The TurkmenTravel-2026 forum marks a step in Turkmenistan's gradual push to open up to international visitors. With streamlined visa processes and a focus on heritage and natural wonders, the country is positioning itself as a new destination for cultural and adventure tourism. The event's outcomes may shape future travel routes and partnerships across Central Asia.
