Turkish soldiers meet untimely demise due to methane inhalation during operations in Iraq, claiming the lives of 12 officers.

In a region once occupied by the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) terrorist group, a tragic incident occurred on July 6-7, 2025, during a search operation by Turkish troops. The soldiers were conducting a search in caves that were previously used by the PKK as a field hospital, near the area of Operation Claw Lock, which aimed to combat PKK militants in the Metina, Zap, or Avasin-Basyan regions of northern Iraq.

The troops were searching for the remains of a soldier who had been killed by Kurdish fighters in May 2022. During the operation, 19 Turkish personnel were exposed to methane gas in a mountain cave at an altitude of approximately 2,795 feet.

Methane is a colorless, odorless, and flammable gas that can be lethal in sufficient concentrations. Five soldiers died initially on July 6 from methane gas poisoning, followed by seven more deaths reported on July 7, bringing the total fatalities to 12 Turkish soldiers. Several others were hospitalized, with their conditions not fully disclosed.

The Turkish Defense Ministry confirmed the deaths and expressed condolences, with Defense Minister Yaşar Güler visiting the region to oversee inspections and funeral arrangements. The incident highlights the ongoing dangers faced during counterterrorism operations in the region and comes amid sensitive negotiations between Turkey and Kurdish groups to end the decades-long conflict.

Meanwhile, the PKK is moving towards disarmament and ending armed conflict. In a significant development, the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) has announced its decision to disband and renounce armed conflict after nearly four decades of hostilities. A weapon handover ceremony involving PKK fighters is scheduled to take place between July 10 and July 12, 2025, in Sulaymaniyah, a city in the semi-autonomous Kurdish region of northern Iraq.

However, the PKK demands the abolition of the isolation of its imprisoned leader Abdullah Öcalan and constitutional, legal, and political measures to reintegrate former guerrillas into democratic politics in Turkey. The PKK is expected to hand over light weapons to the regional Kurdish government, controlled by the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK).

These developments underscore the complex and volatile security situation in the region as efforts toward peace and reconciliation are underway. The loss of Turkish soldiers in the methane gas incident serves as a grim reminder of the dangers still present in the region, even as both sides strive for a peaceful resolution to the long-standing conflict.
