TRNC President Ersin Tatar Pushes for Two-State Solution in Cyprus

Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) President Ersin Tatar has reiterated his support for a two-state solution for Cyprus, emphasizing the TRNC's sovereignty as a key component of any progress on the island.

During a recent meeting with departing UN Cyprus envoy Colin Stewart, Tatar expressed his concerns regarding the UN Security Council's decision on Cyprus, which he views as outdated and no longer valid given the significant changes in the region, the status of Cyprus, and developments in the Eastern Mediterranean and Turkey.

Tatar criticized the Security Council's inclination towards a "two-zone, two-community" federation, stating that negotiations based on that framework have failed, and the Greek Cypriot side has shown no intention to reach a solution under those terms.

The TRNC President also stressed that the Greek Cypriot side should be treated as an equal sovereign entity, and he rejected the idea that a two-state solution is impossible or will never be recognized internationally. He argued that these assertions should not be used dismissively against the TRNC's position.

Tatar thanked Stewart for his service as special representative, expressing gratitude for their past productive meetings. He also acknowledged Stewart's concern for Turkish Cypriots and their interests.

In summary, Tatar's stance is that a two-state solution is the only viable path forward, underpinned by the TRNC's sovereignty, and he regards the existing UN framework and Security Council decisions as obsolete given the geopolitical and regional shifts since their adoption. The TRNC President remains committed to finding a solution that respects the sovereignty of both sides and promotes peace and stability in the region.
