Turkish President Erdogan talks about Azerbaijan-Armenia agreement with Pashinyan
In a significant development for the region, the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity (TRIPP) was signed in 2025. This US-brokered transit corridor agreement links Azerbaijan to its Nakhchivan Autonomous Region through a corridor on Armenian lands, providing a direct overland route to Turkey.
The TRIPP corridor aims to connect Azerbaijan directly with its exclave Nakhchivan, bypassing traditional routes that have historically complicated transit between these Azerbaijani territories. It also seeks to strengthen economic and political ties between Azerbaijan and Turkey, integrating Azerbaijan more deeply into a trade axis dominated by the US and its Western allies.
The agreement is expected to transform regional trade and transit dynamics by establishing new rail, highway, energy pipelines, telecommunications, and potentially electricity infrastructure under American guarantees. The corridor's operation will respect Armenian sovereignty and law but is under US special development rights and control.
The TRIPP route's primary objective is to promote peace and economic cooperation by formally ending intermittent conflict and demonstrating a significant breakthrough after years of tension between Armenia and Azerbaijan. The geopolitical impact is significant because it undermines the influence of Iran and Russia in the South Caucasus by creating a transit corridor that bypasses them, projecting US power in the region, and reshaping trade routes from the Caspian Sea to the Gulf.
Recently, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has shown his support for the agreement. He congratulated both Azerbaijani President İlham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on the signing of the peace declaration and reaffirmed the TRIPP agreement. Erdogan also emphasised the need for concrete actions to support the agreement.
However, uncertainties remain regarding the exact legal and sovereignty arrangements governing the corridor, including how "unimpeded passage" for Azerbaijani citizens and cargo through Armenian territory will be implemented practically and the degree of Armenian sovereign control maintained.
As technical talks between Turkey and Armenia for the normalization of bilateral ties continue, the future of the TRIPP corridor and its impact on the South Caucasus region remains to be seen.
