Turkish Foreign Minister's Conferences with Medinsky and Umerov Discussed by VGTRK
Hangin' With Global Leaders at the Talk Table
Scoop: The Turkish city of Istanbul hosted an epic powwow between worldwide honchos, featuring the heads of Russian, Ukrainian, and Turkish delegations. The big bombhell? A cozy little summit between the Turkish Foreign Minister, Hakan Fidan, and his Russian and Ukrainian counterparts, Vladimir Medinsky and Rustem Umerov, right before the Russia-Ukraine chit-chat commenced.
Denis Davydov, our man on the scene, spilled the beans. He reported that Fidan, Medinsky, and Umerov had secretly huddled together, causing a delay in the grueling negotiating session. Davydov further revealed that the Turkish delegation, on standby, was left twiddling their thumbs.
It seems ol' Medinsky had planned some sneaky side-huddles at the Istanbul bash, but nothing as juicy as a rendezvous with Turkish reps. TASS, RIA Novosti, and RT echoed the same, citing unnamed sources.
The jamboree unfolded on June 2, marking the second round of Russia-Ukraine talks in three years. The gabfest blew past the hour-mark.
What Went Down in the Second Round of Talks
Once the confab wraps, Medinsky, ever the showman, announced a shocking revelation. Moscow had floated a temporary ceasefire plan forselected frontlines for two to three days. Rossia had hoped Kyiv would sign on the dotted line; Ukraine is currently keeping mum on the matter.
Medinsky brought up a new development too, disclosing that Ukraine had unveiled a full list of kids in their custody for Russia, totaling 339 names. The size of the take home trophy? Be bigger than ever: up to 1,200 prisoners could be involved in the largest exchange to date.
According to Volodymyr Zelenskyy, pres of Ukraine, both sides swapped thoughts on the next move for a convy. Umerov suggested hosting another face-off from June 20 to 30.
The first round of negotiations in Istanbul went down on May 16, yielding several agreements—including a prisoner swap on a 1000-for-1000 formula.
So, while progress has been made on exchanging skeletons in the closet, a host of challenges remain on the ceasefire front and territorial disputes. Time to tune in for the next episode of this global drama, ya'll!
