In light of an unsettling episode that witnessed Faruk Koca, ex-president of Ankaragücü, unleashing a vicious punch on referee Halil Umut Meler, the Turkish Football Association (TFA) has served Koca with a lifetime ban. Additionally, the TFA fined Ankaragücü close to 63,000 euros and forbade the team from entertaining spectators in their next five home games. These sanctions were articulated by the TFA.
The TFA cited "incidents on the pitch caused by club members and fans" as the justification for the administrations. Other officials associated with the club faced fines and warnings. Koca himself was slapped with a five-year ban, which, according to TFA regulations, escalates to permanent exclusion after the three-year mark.
The incident took place following an equalizer scored by Çaykur Rizespor in the seventh minute of added time during their match against MKE Ankaragücü. In video footage, Koca was captured launching his fist, connecting with Meler's face. Following the impact, Meler tumbled to the ground, where other involved parties proceeded to kick him.
Koca quit his post on Tuesday evening, after initially trivializing the violence by mocking Meler: "I struck him, then he dramatized it." Lying to the public, Meler was released from the hospital prematurely on Tuesday's morning.
Consequently, all Turkish league matches have been suspended until December 19. The controversy stirred controversy beyond Turkish borders, resulting in fierce reproaches from influential figures such as former commendable referee Pierluigi Collina, FIFA President Gianni Infantino, and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
