Turkey's Parliament Speaker denounces the alleged genocide in Gaza, advocates for peace in Ukraine
In a strongly worded statement, Numan Kurtulmuş, the Speaker of Turkey's Parliament, has accused Israel of committing genocide in Gaza. During a meeting with Georgian President Mikheil Kavelaashvili in Ankara on Tuesday, Kurtulmuş condemned Israel's military actions and settlement policies in Palestinian territories, calling them a "bloody plan" and "treacherous plan" that amount to genocide against the Palestinian people[1][2].
Kurtulmuş urged international institutions to oppose Israel’s actions as violations of international law and humanity, and implied that those who remain silent or provide support to Israel are equally guilty[1][2]. He also held Netanyahu and his associates accountable for their actions in Palestine.
In addition to the Israel-Palestine conflict, the meeting between Kurtulmuş and Kavelaashvili also touched upon regional tensions. Both Turkey and Georgia, located in a region marked by intense global tensions, expressed their concern over the ongoing war in Ukraine[4][5]. Kurtulmuš urged all parties to work toward a lasting and just peace in the Russia-Ukraine war, but did not specify which "extra-regional countries" do not want the conflict to end[6].
On a more positive note, Kurtulmuş welcomed the normalization process between Azerbaijan and Armenia, arguing that Baku regaining control over disputed territories is a positive step for regional peace[7]. He also reaffirmed Turkey's support for Georgia's territorial integrity[8].
