Turkey urges the United Nations to take decisive actions to halt Israel's alleged immunity from accountability
In recent developments, tensions between Israel and its neighbours have escalated, with strong condemnations and accusations of violence being levelled against the Jewish state.
Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, appreciated President Trump's stance on the Jerusalem issue, including the declaration of Jerusalem as the capital and the move of the American embassy there. However, this decision has not been universally accepted, with Turkey expressing strong condemnation of Israel's actions.
Turkey's Ambassador to the UN Geneva Office, Burak Akcapar, condemned Israel's September 9 attack on Qatar and emphasised that Israel's unchecked violence poses a serious threat to international peace and security and the rules-based international order. Akcapar also stated that Israel's ongoing aggression and genocidal intent are worsening the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
The ongoing situation in Gaza has been described as one of the "most vicious examples" of genocide in current times by the Turkish Parliament Speaker, Numan Kurtulmuş. He stated that approximately 75,000 people have been killed in Gaza, and tens of thousands are missing.
Israel's actions in Gaza are not the only point of contention. Netanyahu's response to President Erdogan's past statements about Jerusalem, stating that Jerusalem is Israel's city and will always remain so, has further fuelled tensions.
The conflict in Gaza is not isolated to the region. Akcapar stated that Israel's violence is destabilizing a broader region, including Lebanon, Syria, Iran, Yemen, Tunisia, and most recently Qatar.
The Turkish Parliament Speaker also detailed the broader oppression in Palestinian territories, including the conscious oppression of Muslims and persecution of Palestinian farmers and civilians.
Furthermore, the issue of Cyprus has become a point of contention. Kurtulmuş stated that Israel considers Cyprus part of the "Promised Land." He named Greece and the Greek Cypriot Administration as supporters of Israel in Cyprus during his meeting with officials of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus in March 2021.
Kurtulmuş revealed concerning military developments in Cyprus, stating that Israel has been providing support to certain bases and shipping military equipment and ammunition to Greek Cyprus. He warned about Israel's territorial ambitions that include Cyprus, linking recent military developments to a broader expansionist agenda.
Israel's stance on peace and stability in Cyprus has been questioned, with Kurtulmuş stating that Israel does not want peace and stability in Cyprus.
In response to these allegations, Netanyahu has remained silent, leaving the international community to watch Israel's actions with fear, as Kurtulmuş stated, cowering because they have power.
The Ottoman Empire ruled over Jerusalem from 1516 to 1917, adding another layer of historical complexity to the ongoing conflict. As the situation continues to unfold, the international community remains divided, with some supporting Israel's actions and others condemning them.
