Turkish Authorities Suspend Imamoglu's Social Media Account Amid Allegations of Incitement to Crime
Turkey restricts X accounts of jailed mayor Imamoğlu through censorship efforts
In a controversial move, the X-account of Ekrem Imamoglu, the imprisoned and ousted Mayor of Istanbul, has been suspended in Turkey. The Communication Directorate announced that an investigation has been initiated against Imamoglu due to a post on his X page in April. Imamoglu's team has lodged an appeal against the decision, stating, "Although we have adhered to Turkey's order regarding the account, we contest the order and are challenging it in court. We firmly believe that maintaining the platform's access in Turkey is essential for freedom of speech and timely information dissemination, particularly in post-disaster situations or emergencies."
Critics accuse the Turkish government of using the legal system to eliminate Imamoglu, the strongest contender of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in the upcoming elections. Mass protests have erupted throughout the country since his arrest on March 19, following corruption and terrorism probes.
On Wednesday, demonstrators gathered once more, this time outside the university that revoked Imamoglu's degree right before his detainment. The social media platform X confirmed that the account block was requested by the Erdogan administration, and it is challenging the order in court. Meanwhile, the government denies allegations of censorship and repression, asserting that the judiciary is acting independently.
