Turkey convenes inaugural meeting for National Solidarity Commission, aiming for a terror-free Turkey
Turkey's National Solidarity, Brotherhood and Democracy Commission Kicks Off
The National Solidarity, Brotherhood and Democracy Commission, established within the framework of the "Terror-Free Türkiye" initiative, held its first meeting on August 5, 2025. The commission, which aims to eliminate terrorism from Türkiye, strengthen national unity, enhance social cohesion and brotherhood, and foster freedom, democracy, and the rule of law, was chaired by Turkish Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş.
The commission, operating within the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye, will closely follow the historic period in which Turkey has a unique opportunity to make peace permanent. The commission's procedures and principles were unanimously approved during the meeting, setting a strong foundation for its future work.
The commission is inclusive of representatives from most political parties, including those without parliamentary groups. During the first meeting, representatives shared their views on the process and the commission's importance. High-level officials such as the Interior Minister, Defense Minister, and National Intelligence Organization Director have been invited to attend future sessions, where they will brief the commission on institutional activities and current developments relevant to the initiative.
The commission's scope includes proposing, evaluating, and supervising necessary legal reforms and draft legislation to support peace and democracy. It also acts as a deliberative body rooted in negotiation, reflecting the will of the people and promoting national reconciliation among all ethnic and social groups. The commission will also ensure public awareness by keeping the public well informed about the process.
Meetings of the commission are held under strict confidentiality, with transcripts sealed for ten years to enable open and transparent discussion among members. The commission is set to reconvene on Friday, August 8, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. (GMT +3), in the Ceremony Hall of the Turkish Grand National Assembly.
