On August 2, 2025, a significant milestone was reached as Turkey, Azerbaijan, and Qatar partnered to supply natural gas to war-torn Syria via a newly inaugurated 93-kilometer pipeline. The pipeline, constructed by Turkish company BOTAŞ, connects Kahramanmaraş province in Turkey to Syria through Kilis, allowing the transport of Azerbaijani natural gas to Syria.

The historic event was marked by an official opening ceremony attended by high-level ministers and officials from Azerbaijan (Minister of Economy Mikayil Jabbarov), Turkey (Minister of Energy Alparslan Bayraktar), Syria (Minister of Energy Mohammed Al-Bashir), and the Qatar Development Fund (Head Fahad Hamad Hassan Al-Sulaiti). This trilateral cooperation is a significant step towards revitalizing Syria's war-damaged energy infrastructure.

The pipeline, with a daily gas supply capacity of up to 6 million cubic meters, is expected to deliver up to 2 billion cubic meters of gas annually. This gas will primarily target power plants in Aleppo and Homs, enabling them to generate 1,200–1,300 megawatts of electricity. This increase in electricity supply could potentially lift the daily electricity supply from the current 3-4 hours to around 10 hours, benefiting approximately 5 million households.

The project addresses Syria’s long-term energy shortages, which have been aggravated by the civil war, damaged power plants, and disrupted supply routes. It also symbolizes broader regional cooperation, with Turkey acting as a transit and support hub for Syria’s energy restoration, and Qatar providing development funding.

The pipeline's construction was facilitated by an agreement between the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) and the Syrian government. Turkey has also signed a swap agreement with SOCAR to deliver gas at the Turkey-Syria border.

The Syrian energy infrastructure suffered extensive damage due to the civil war that began in 2011. Power generation facilities, transmission lines, and natural gas systems were heavily damaged, reducing daily electricity supply in many regions to just 3-4 hours. Following the collapse of the Baath regime in December 2024, a transitional period was launched in Syria, with the reconstruction of energy infrastructure identified as a top priority.

Turkey expressed gratitude towards Qatar for its strong support of the project, citing the 2014 launch of the High Strategic Committee as a key step in strengthening cooperation. With this historic pipeline, Syria's journey towards energy independence and the restoration of its power supply is well underway.
