In the ongoing saga of the 41 workers stuck in an Indian tunnel for two weeks, the rescue efforts continue to drag on. Following multiple repairs, a large drilling machine hit a snag and ceased functioning. The helpers are now depending on smaller tools, just one of the setbacks extending the rescue process.

As per Arnold Dix, an Australian expert participating in the operation, he predicted the rescue would wrap up by Christmas during an appearance on Indian television station NDTV. Upon first attempt, they attempted to utilize the large machine to drill a pipe through the debris, with the aim of clearing a path for the trapped individuals. However, the machine faced numerous obstacles like steel fragments and broken equipment, eventually becoming unrepaired, according to Dix.

Now, the team plans on entering the pushed-in pipe with smaller, specialized tools, slowly advancing through the mountain. They also aim to drill vertically into the mountain in hopes of reaching the trapped workers.

The 4.5-kilometer-long tunnel under construction partially collapsed on November 12 due to a landslide near Uttarkashi. The workers receive food, water, oxygen, and medication through narrow pipes, while they also anticipate a phone connection to keep in touch with their families.

Pushkar Singh Dhami, head of Uttarakhand's government, reported the trapped men are in good condition. It remains unclear when they will be extracted from the rubble, but experts remain hopeful for a successful rescue.

Construction delays continue to plague the region due to frequent accidents, with the makeshift rescue facility no exception. Recent equipment failures and the challenging terrain pose additional hurdles.
