Nigeria's men's basketball team, D'Tigers, have demonstrated their dominance in the group stage of the 2025 FIBA Men's AfroBasket, currently taking place in Angola. After convincing victories over Madagascar (77-59) and Tunisia, D'Tigers top Group B with a perfect 3-0 record and have secured a direct quarterfinal qualification.
Against Madagascar, D'Tigers took control in the third quarter to pull away for an 18-point win. Caleb Agada led the charge with 22 points, supported by Stan Okoye (13), captain Ike Nwamu (12), and Kaodirichi Akobundu (10). Madagascar's Sitraka Raharimanantoanina scored 20 points, but could not match Nigeria's defensive pressure in the third quarter that broke the game open.
In the clash with Tunisia, three-time champions weakened by the absence of veterans and recovering from a surprising loss to Cameroon, D'Tigers aimed to maintain their momentum. Although direct stat lines for this specific game are not detailed, analysis points to Nigeria's combined scoring and all-around performance of key players such as Caleb Agada and Stan Okoye underpinning their effort to secure top spot and an automatic quarter-final berth from Group B. Nigeria's victory over Tunisia was anticipated as part of their undefeated group run.
Jawhar Jawadi was the main player relied upon by Tunisia in their game against Nigeria. However, D'Tigers started the game with a 10-0 run and held a 29-16 advantage by the end of the first quarter. By halftime, D'Tigers extended their lead to 48-33. In the third quarter, D'Tigers widened the gap to 68-47. The defeat for Tunisia follows their earlier loss to Cameroon in the tournament. Tunisia is recovering from an earlier 86-65 loss to Cameroon. This marks Tunisia's third consecutive loss in the 2025 FIBA Men's AfroBasket championship. On the other hand, Nigeria's victory keeps them in contention for a second AfroBasket title, ten years after their first win in 2015.
D'Tigers will face Cameroon in their final group game on Sunday, a match that could determine the top spot in Group B. Both D'Tigers and Cameroon currently have perfect records in the tournament. Josh Okogie, a player for the Houston Rockets in the NBA, scored the highest individual tally of the game with 33 points.
