Trunk Contains a Surprising Equine Passenger!
In a recent incident in Alsdorf, Germany, a police officer discovered a horse being transported in the trunk of a car during a routine traffic stop on September 3, 2025. The driver, who was transporting a pony in the trunk of the car, initially refused to pay a fine of 35 EUR when the situation was pointed out. However, a fine has now been initiated against the driver.
The pony was standing on a rug in the backseat of the car, which had been folded down. It appeared relaxed and had a bucket of supplies with it. Despite the seemingly calm situation, this method of transport is unsafe and not legally permitted in Germany.
The Aachen Police are reminding everyone to secure cargo properly. Unsecured or improperly secured objects in a frontal collision at 50 km/h can develop 50 times their own weight, according to crash tests conducted by the ADAC in 2024. In this case, if a pony weighing 150 kg in a car traveling at 50 km/h and a crash occurs, the pony could suddenly weigh up to 7.5 tons. This sudden weight increase could forcefully throw the pony towards the driver's seat, posing a life-threatening risk to the pony, the driver, and other road users. Even the lead rope may not withstand the increased weight.
The Aachen Police provide tips on how to secure cargo properly in a car. They emphasise that even short distances require proper cargo securing, as dangerous situations or accidents can never be completely ruled out.
