Trump's upcoming encounter with Putin casts doubts on the possibility of peace in the Ukraine conflict, according to experts' predictions

The much-anticipated summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin took place in Alaska on Friday, marking the first Russia-US presidential meeting on US soil since 2007. However, the expected outcome of progress on peace in Ukraine was not realized, as the meeting concluded without a ceasefire deal or agreement announced.

The talks, held at the Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, focused on the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian War. Despite both leaders describing the discussions as substantive and occurring in a respectful atmosphere, no joint resolution was produced. Putin later characterized the dialogue as constructive and productive but did not announce any joint initiatives or ceasefire plans.

Notably, the European Union (EU) was not represented in the talks, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was not invited by the White House. Instead, Zelensky was directly invited by Putin. The exclusion of Zelensky and EU officials from the talks has raised objections from Kyiv and Brussels. The White House did not provide a reason for the exclusion of EU officials from the talks, but it expressed that a deal cannot be reached with only one party present.

The meeting between Trump and Putin is a significant escalation of diplomatic efforts to resolve the Ukraine conflict, now in its fourth year. The summit is being closely watched for its potential impact on the conflict, which is the subject of ongoing diplomatic efforts. Security measures for the meeting will be exceptionally tight, including the closure of airspace over Anchorage on Friday and Saturday, and the US Secret Service and Russia's Federal Protective Service will collaborate to ensure the leaders' safety.

The meeting could potentially mark a turning point or another false dawn in efforts to end Europe's deadliest conflict since World War II. As the talks concluded, Trump suggested that Ukraine would need to cede territory to end the war. Putin, however, did not announce any specific plans or initiatives regarding the conflict's resolution.
