Trump's Team Delays 2022 Election Transition, Skips Security Clearance

Following the U.S. election, both President Trump and President-elect Biden have access to transition materials, as per a 2022 law. However, Trump's team has yet to sign an agreement with the current administration, potentially delaying the process if he wins.

The General Services Administration (GSA) has finalized briefing documents for both candidates, with Biden's team receiving theirs by Nov. 1. They swiftly began setting up meetings within hours of GSA's ascertainment in mid-November. Trump's team, however, has not signed a memorandum of understanding with GSA, which could cause delays in agencies knowing who will occupy their offices.

Trump's team is now considering skipping the security clearance process altogether. In 2016, Trump's post-election transition planning was hindered by delays due to his decision to abandon efforts led by Rich Bagger and former Gov. Chris Christie. Federal agencies have prepared their materials for the winning side's transition team by the statutory deadline.

Both Vice President Harris and Trump can send their 'landing teams' into agencies beginning Nov. 10, even if no candidate immediately concedes. The materials outline the basics of each agency's operations and include details on ongoing and future projects. However, Trump's team's actions could cause delays in a smooth transition if he wins the election.
