Trump's pick, Jay Clayton, was appointed as the interim US attorney for the Southern District of New York by a federal court, extending his term. This makes Clayton the president's first undisputed US attorney appointment of significance.

In a move that marks President Trump's first significant US attorney appointment to go unchallenged, Jay Clayton was appointed as interim U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York during Trump's second term.

Clayton, a former corporate lawyer, served as the chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) from 2017 to 2020 under the Trump administration. With over two decades of experience in corporate law, he brings deep-rooted ties to Wall Street to the table[1][2].

The significance of his appointment lies in his extensive regulatory and financial expertise. The Southern District of New York holds a high-profile jurisdiction over major financial institutions and complex white-collar crime. His background as SEC chairman positions him to bring a strong understanding of securities law enforcement to the office, which is notable given the district's frequent involvement in financial litigation and investigations[1][2].

However, it's important to note that Clayton has never been a prosecutor before. This could potentially present new challenges as he navigates the role of U.S. Attorney.

Meanwhile, in New Jersey, Senators have blocked Trump's nomination for US attorney, Alina Habba. In a similar situation, Geoff Berman, US attorney in Manhattan during Trump's first term, was also never confirmed by the Senate but was appointed by the district court judges. Interestingly, the district court judges in the Northern District of New York declined to appoint a US attorney, leaving John Sarcone III, Trump's choice for the position, in limbo[1][2].

In a reversal of events, the judges in the Southern District of New York appointed a US attorney, marking a departure from Trump's inability to get US attorneys in place during his second term. However, Habba's appointment as interim US attorney in New Jersey has been challenged in two court cases, and Trump later fired the attorney selected by federal judges to replace her[1][2].
