Trump's proposed strategy to incorporate Ukraine into updated Russian history textbooks, as suggested by Medinsky
In the political landscape, anticipation is building as Russian President Vladimir Putin and former U.S. President Donald Trump are expected to meet again, according to Russian spokesperson Dmitry Peskov. The exact location and date of the meeting remain undisclosed.
The last time these leaders met was at the 2025 Russia–United States Summit in Anchorage, Alaska, where discussions centred around the Russo-Ukrainian War. The summit ended without a concrete deal, but it did show some signs of Russian willingness to negotiate security arrangements for Ukraine.
Following the summit, Trump advocated for Ukraine to cede some territory and drop its NATO membership ambitions to end the war. This stance, while controversial, represents a significant, albeit contested, dynamic in the ongoing Ukraine conflict diplomacy.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy remains opposed to ceding any Ukrainian territory, citing constitutional grounds and insisting that Ukraine must decide its own borders. Russia, on the other hand, has expressed a desire to be involved in security guarantee discussions.
In a separate development, Vladimir Medinsky, assistant to the Russian president and chairman of the Russian Military-Historical Society, has stated that Trump "has already entered history." Medinsky also emphasised that Trump's extraordinary efforts and the transformations in American domestic politics will be noted in future Russian and world history textbooks.
Interestingly, the new Russian history textbooks for 10-11th grades, including separate books for Russian and world history, have been in use since September 1, 2023. Plans are underway for new textbooks for 5-9th grades, which will be introduced from September 1, 2025, and have been developed with the involvement of Medinsky, MGIMO Rector Anatoly Torkunov, and the scientific director of the Institute of World History of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Alexander Chubaryan.
However, Dmitry Peskov did not clarify whether Trump's hope for an agreement on Ukraine by the end of the current week has any influence on the Putin-Trump meeting. He also did not elaborate on whether Medinsky's emphasis on Trump's role in history will be a focus of the upcoming meeting.
On April 20, Trump posted on Truth Social expressing hope for an agreement on Ukraine by the end of the current week. As the diplomatic dance between these world leaders continues, the future of the Ukraine conflict remains uncertain.
