Trump's persistence in seeking legal action against New York Attorney General Letitia James prompts the resignation of the Virginia prosecutor.
In a recent turn of events, the investigation into New York Attorney General Letitia James has taken an interesting turn. On Friday night, it was reported by The Associated Press that U.S. Attorney Erik Siebert has stepped down from his position. This news comes after President Donald Trump proposed Christopher Kise as the special prosecutor to continue the investigation against James, replacing Siebert. The investigation has been focusing partly on a document submitted by one of James's relatives for the purchase of a Virginia home in 2023. Abbe Lowell, James's lawyer, stated in an April letter to U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi that Pulte omitted records which refute all of his allegations. According to Lowell's letter, James stated two weeks earlier that her niece would live in the Virginia home. However, the document used in the purchase of the Virginia home mistakenly listed it as James's primary residence, although James stated otherwise. City records, on the other hand, prove that James's New York City home has had four units for the past two decades, contradicting Pulte's claims that James misrepresented her home to obtain favorable mortgage rates and terms. Other documents show that James's New York City home has been used how she describes, with four units, not five as Pulte suggests, for the past two decades. The letter from Lowell to Bondi addresses Pulte's allegations against James. ABC News reported a day earlier that President Donald Trump was likely to fire Siebert, following Pulte's encouragement after Siebert declined to indict James for alleged mortgage fraud. However, the administration officials had pressured Siebert to charge James despite a lack of evidence that she knowingly produced false information. James was referred to the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) for potentially falsifying records to meet mortgage lending requirements and obtain more favorable loan terms. As the investigation continues, it remains to be seen how these developments will impact the case against New York Attorney General Letitia James.
