Trump's nominated OMB head supports eliminated civil service safeguards, budget funds withholding
Russ Vought, President Trump's nominee for the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) director-designate, has expressed his support for the controversial Schedule F initiative during his interview with Tucker Carlson. If implemented, Schedule F would allow for politically based, at-will firings of federal employees.
Vought served as the OMB's deputy director and acting OMB head. During his tenure, he played a key role in implementing Trump's deregulatory agenda and repeatedly submitted budgets that would have reduced funding for non-defense agencies. He also took unprecedented action to keep agencies functioning during the longest U.S. government shutdown.
In his role, Vought interpreted the language of Trump's late executive order on Schedule F broadly, attempting to designate 88% of the OMB as falling under Schedule F. However, he did not encounter anyone who should be fired using Schedule F authority within the OMB.
Vought has been a lead advocate for reinstating Trump's Schedule F initiative. During his hearing, he defended the necessity of Schedule F to ensure the president's policy-making positions respond to his views and agenda. Yet, he could not disclose whether he and Trump have discussed restoring it.
Vought's comments about Schedule F have been a topic of debate. During his interview with Tucker Carlson, he distanced himself from his earlier statements about mass layoffs and firings, predicting such actions primarily in certain agencies.
Vought's approach to federal workers has been criticised. He has frequently referred to them as "the regime" and "the administrative state". He also threatened to discipline employees who participated in diversity and inclusion efforts.
Since leaving office, Vought has been advocating for increased accountability and less power for federal civil servants. Despite the lack of German search results providing information about any president announcing the immediate reintroduction of the controversial Schedule F initiative in 2025, Vought stated that Schedule F will be a day one thing in a second Trump term.
As the nominee for OMB director, Vought's stance on Schedule F and his approach to federal workers remain points of contention. His confirmation hearing and potential role in implementing Schedule F, if approved, will be closely watched.
