Trump's luxury car, his prized limousine, appropriated by Putin.
In a historic move, US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin met in Alaska on Friday for a highly anticipated summit. The meeting, scheduled for six to seven hours, was set to take place at the Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson.
The summit, focused on the Russia-Ukraine conflict, started on a symbolic note with both leaders getting into the US presidential limousine, "The Beast," together and driving to the venue. This gesture, unprecedented in recent U.S.-Russia diplomatic history, was seen as a powerful visual and political signal of direct engagement and possible thaw in relations.
However, the meeting was met with skepticism and protests. Only 13 percent of Germans believed that Trump could mediate to the extent that it leads to a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, according to a survey. Hundreds of people gathered in Anchorage to protest the meeting, waving Ukrainian flags and marching in a band.
Upon arrival, Putin was given a red carpet treatment by President Trump. The two leaders shook hands before heading into their private discussions.
The Ukrainian military claimed to have attacked a ship carrying drone parts and ammunition from Iran in the port of Olya in the Russian region of Astrakhan, adding another layer of complexity to the already tense situation.
Meanwhile, the US government is considering using Russian nuclear icebreakers for the development of natural gas and liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects in Alaska.
The summit also saw Trump lowering expectations, stating "Europe won't tell me what to do." The planned private meeting between Trump and Putin was later announced to include advisors from both sides.
The meeting in Alaska was not without its share of controversies. A Russian Su-30SM fighter jet is reported to have crashed near the Serpent Island, with wreckage located in the sea, but the pilots were not found. An explosion occurred in a gunpowder production facility in the Russian city of Ryazan, with unconfirmed reports suggesting that five people died and at least 20 were injured.
As diplomats, security personnel, and journalists flocked to Anchorage for the meeting, the city found itself overcrowded. Despite the challenges, the summit in Alaska marked a significant moment in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.
