Elon Musk Slams Trump's "Astounding Monstrosity"
Trump's legislation, dubbed the "Big Beautiful Bill," draws ire from Musk, who expresses his criticism.
In a bold move, billionaire tech tycoon Elon Musk has lashed out at President Donald Trump's tax and spending bill, labeling it an "astounding monstrosity." Musk expresses his disapproval on his online platform, X, stating that the bill's plans would send the already astronomical budget deficit and national debt soaring to unimaginable heights. He predicts a staggering deficit of $2.5 trillion.
The bill, affectionately nicknamed the "big beautiful law" by President Trump, passed the House of Representatives with a slim majority in May. However, several members of Trump's Republican Party in the Senate have voiced their opposition to it, objecting to the planned increase in the debt ceiling and demanding harsher spending cuts.
White House Response
The White Housereacted dismissively: "The President already knows what Elon Musk thinks of this law," said Karoline Leavitt, the President's spokeswoman. Trump remains firm in his support for the bill.
Political Split
Among other provisions, the bill intends to permanently extend tax cuts from Trump's first term, which has sparked strong opposition from the Democrats. Coincidentally, Democratic Senator Bernie Sanders endorsed Musk's criticism. "Musk is right," Sanders wrote on X. He emphasized that the wealthiest Americans would receive $664 billion in tax cuts, while $290 billion would be slashed from food assistance for those in need.
Musk's Dilemma
Musk's vehement criticism came after he had previously expressed milder concerns, expressing his "disappointment" over the administration's actions in cutting government spending that he had previously advocated for. Despite his reservations, Musk told TV station CBS that he found himself in a "pickle," unwilling to criticize the government while striving to avoid endorsing questionable decisions.
Now, Musk is unleashing his frustration with the words: "I'm sorry, but I can't take it anymore."
Musk previously donated more than $250 million to Trump's campaign and enjoyed a close relationship with the President. However, signs of Musk's reduced influence within Trump's circle have emerged in recent months.
