Los Angeles Protests and the National Guard Deployment

In a recent turn of events, US President Donald Trump has managed to maintain control over the around 4,000 National Guard soldiers stationed in Los Angeles due to the city's demonstrations. A federal appeals court in San Francisco pronounced this decision on Thursday evening.

This ruling reverses an initial injunction issued by a district court in San Francisco last week, declaring the National Guard deployment by the US government unlawful. The appeals court initially delayed the order after the US government filed an appeal.

A panel of three judges - including two judges appointed by Trump and one by former President Joe Biden - unanimously decided in favor of Trump.

Trump took to his Truth Social platform to celebrate the decision, calling it a "big win." He stated, "This is a great decision for our country, and we will continue to protect and defend law-abiding Americans."

California Governor Gavin Newsom, on the other hand, expressed his disappointment in a statement and declared that he would continue to challenge "President Trump's authoritarian use of US soldiers against citizens." The West Coast state now has the option to petition the appeals court to reconsider the case or directly appeal to the Supreme Court, according to the New York Times.

Protests against Trump's Immigration Policy

The disagreement between the US government and California was sparked by demonstrations opposing Trump's stringent immigration policy and ICE immigration raids. The US government deployed 4,000 National Guard soldiers and 700 regular marine infantry in Los Angeles to maintain order during these protests. They are expected to remain until the danger subsides, as per Trump's wishes. The initial deployment was scheduled for a maximum of 60 days.

Governor Newsom had been vocal in his criticism of the deployment. Typically, state governments have command over the National Guard. However, in the event of war or national emergencies, the US President can take charge. The National Guard is a military reserve unit and part of the US armed forces, which can be deployed in various situations such as natural disasters, unrest, or internal emergencies.
