Senator Adam Schiff, a prominent figure in American politics, is currently under a federal criminal investigation by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Maryland for alleged mortgage fraud involving his Maryland home.

The investigation, which centers on allegations that Schiff falsified bank documents and property records to obtain more favorable loan terms on a Potomac, Maryland property from 2003 to 2019, was initiated following a criminal referral from the U.S. Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) in May 2025.

According to the FHFA, Schiff and his wife purchased the Maryland home in 2003, claiming it as their primary residence for mortgage purposes. However, despite this designation, Schiff also declared a California condo as his primary residence starting in 2009, allowing him to claim a California homeowner's tax exemption.

The FHFA alleges multiple instances of falsification of documents and property records, but Schiff has denied any wrongdoing. He has called the investigation a politically motivated attempt at retribution.

This investigation follows a pattern where prominent individuals tied to or opposed by former President Trump have come under scrutiny by regulators and federal authorities.

Senator Schiff, who oversaw the first impeachment trial against President Trump in 2020, has been a frequent target of Trump's criticism. Trump has repeatedly condemned Schiff for promoting the "Russiagate" hoax and accused him of manufacturing and politicizing intelligence during the investigation.

In response to the allegations, Schiff has launched a legal defense fund. He publicly condemned the prospect of preemptive pardons as "unnecessary" and setting a bad precedent, but was among lawmakers who received preemptive pardons on President Joe Biden's final day in office in 2025.

A Democratic whistleblower accused Schiff of approving the leaking of classified information on Trump that could be used to indict him. However, Schiff has denied these allegations.

Schiff served on the Jan. 6 committee that investigated the U.S. Capitol breach in January 2021. He has been a vocal critic of Trump's actions and policies throughout his presidency.

The "Senator Schiff Legal Defense Fund" was filed with the Internal Revenue Service, and Schiff has vowed to fight the allegations against him. As of the latest reports in August 2025, no public announcements or updates indicate charges have been filed yet; the probe appears ongoing.
