Donald's Dicey Days: A Time Bomb Ticking?

On a Saturday rally in Texas, Donald spoke of a possible pardon for uncharged offenses and demanded that prosecutors target him and his businesses. His rhetoric hit a new low as he called allegations of wrongdoing "fake" and accused authorities of persecuting him.

It's clear that Donald is attempting to stir the ire of his supporters by threatening anyone who stands in his way. His comments also reinforced his false claim that those involved in the January 6th Capitol attack were righteous patriots protecting American democracy, not insurrectionists seeking to destroy it.

The House Select Committees have quickly responded, requesting documents and testimonies from members of Donald's inner circle and potentially investigating witness tampering elsewhere. Last month, House Select Committee Chairman Bennie Thompson sent a letter to Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy requesting information about communications with Donald. Despite McCarthy's refusal to comply, Thompson had also mentioned that comments made by McCarthy on January 6th had changed over time.

Despite Donald's sharp criticism of the House Select Committees and ongoing criminal investigations, his strategy remains the same – playing the role of the victim and resorting to toxic rhetoric. In an era where media attention and online clicks create wealth and power, Donald is the ultimate example of how to flout rules and norms for personal gain.

It should come as no surprise that Donald has now hinted at the possibility of a pardon for those involved in the January 6th Capitol attack.

On one hand, this strengthens his relationship with his supporters, binding their fates together. The mass arrests following the January 6th rally convinced many of his supporters to reconsider following in his footsteps. However, Donald's promise of pardons on Texas soil was a declaration that there was no reason for concern – that, should they vote him back into power in 2024, all would be forgiven. In fact, his supporters cheered as he pledged to "retake the White House."

However, his most recent comments have reached a new low - even for him. Donald has seen the consequences of his earlier calls to action leading to violence and chaos at the Capitol. On January 7, 2021, Donald wisely denounced "violence, lawlessness, and chaos," but now, in calling for more mass protests, he shows that he understands what's coming – and that he doesn't care.

Increasingly, Donald has shown an uncanny ability to raise the stakes. Given his declaration of running for President once again in 2024, there's little doubt that our democracy remains under threat.

"It's all in line with the authoritarian tradition," said Ruth Ben-Ghiat, a NYU professor and expert in authoritarian leaders. Jeffrey Engel, Director of the Center for Presidential History at Southern Methodist University, echoed this concern in a New York Times op-ed, stating that the American public severely underestimates the significance and danger of this situation despite the fact that it's something that has never been attempted before on American soil.[1]

The New York Times highlighted that Trump has played an active role in discussions about "machine theft" in crucial battleground states. It is also clear that Donald pressured former Vice President Mike Pence to overturn the certification of Joe Biden's victory on January 6th, 2021.

Moreover, Trump now claims that "our country and our elections are corrupted," a statement that may not have been uttered by any prior president or President-elect. Trump's insatiable lust for power seems to have no end – despite his failure to overturn the 2020 election results, he remains intent on undermining the very foundations of our nation to avoid accountability and seek power once more.

Enrichment Data:

With Donald Trump's increasing recklessness and influence on U.S. politics and democracy, concerns about the future are mounting. Here are the main points:

  1. Executive Order on FCPA Enforcement:
  2. FCPA Enforcement Freeze: On February 10, 2025, Donald signed an executive order to halt FCPA (Foreign Corrupt Practices Act) investigations and enforcement actions for at least 180 days. The order urges the U.S. Attorney General to resolve existing FCPA cases and provide updated guidelines, arguing that existing enforcement actions undermine American economic competitiveness and national security.[1]
  3. Impact on Democracy Pillars:
  4. Elections: Trump's actions, such as the suspension of voting protections and dismissal of crucial voter access cases, have raised concerns about the integrity of forthcoming elections. These measures could erode trust in the electoral process and lead to greater distrust among the American public.[3]
  5. Rule of Law: The administration's pardoning of over 1,500 January 6 insurrectionists, including violent individuals, and dismissal of independent government watchdogs without cause has been viewed as an affront to the rule of law and checks and balances. Such measures contribute to a perception of lawlessness and weakened constitutional powers.[3][4]
  6. Lawlessness and Checks and Balances:
  7. Pardons and Watchdog Dismissals: Pardoning insurrectionists and dismissing government watchdogs without proper explanation are seen as attempts to undermine the rule of law and checks and balances. This escalating pattern of lawlessness signifies a disregard for constitutional governance and the protection of American families.[4]
  8. Economic and National Security Concerns:
  9. FCPA Enforcement: The halt in FCPA enforcement could have substantial implications for American economic competitiveness and national security, potentially allowing corrupt practices to go unchecked. This could result in uncertainty among foreign governments with their own anti-bribery regulations and damage U.S. interests globally.[1]
  10. Public Perception and Reactions:
  11. Democratic Senators’ Concerns: Democratic senators have expressed concern over Trump's increasing lawlessness, highlighting the pardoning of insurrectionists, dismissal of watchdogs, and funding freeze. They believe these actions are intended to benefit Trump's billionaire supporters to the detriment of working-class families.[4]
  12. Global Reception and Expert Opinions:
  13. Davos 2025: Experts at the 2025 World Economic Forum's annual meeting discussed divergent global and domestic views under Trump's second term. They underscored how Trump's plans could significantly impact climate change, global economy, and international trade, while his administration's actions risked struggling to reconcile tariffs with a domestic policy aiming to reduce living costs.[2]

In short, Trump's actions raise concerns about the integrity of U.S. democracy, the rule of law, and potential economic and national security threats. This escalating pattern of lawlessness and disregard for constitutional governance could have far-reaching implications for American politics and society.
