In a move that has stirred controversy, US President Donald Trump has filed a lawsuit against The New York Times for alleged defamation. The lawsuit, seeking $15 billion in damages, was announced on Trump's Truth Social platform on Monday evening (local time).

The New York Times, one of the most influential national daily newspapers in the US, alongside The Washington Post, is not intimidated by the lawsuit. In a statement, the newspaper reaffirmed its commitment to the constitutional right of journalists to ask questions in the public interest.

The lawsuit comes ahead of the 2024 presidential election, with Trump accusing the newspaper of deliberately and maliciously defaming him. However, the New York Times has dismissed the lawsuit, stating that it will continue to investigate fearlessly.

The German Press Agency has expressed support for The New York Times, stating that the lawsuit lacks a legitimate legal basis and is an attempt to suppress and prevent independent reporting. The agency further emphasised that The New York Times will not be deterred by intimidation tactics.

This is not the first time Trump has taken legal action against a media outlet. The lawsuit against The New York Times is the latest action by Trump to challenge media outlets that publish critical reports about him. Previously, The New York Times had dismissed a similar billion-dollar lawsuit filed by Trump.

The lawsuit was announced in a court document, but the name of the lawyer representing Trump in the dispute against The New York Times is not currently available.

Despite the lawsuit, The New York Times remains undeterred, vowing to continue advocating for the constitutional right of journalists to ask questions in the public interest. The newspaper's unwavering stance against intimidation tactics has been commended by various media organisations, including the German Press Agency.
