The highly-anticipated summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin took place at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska on August 15, 2025. The meeting, primarily focused on the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian War, ended without a formal agreement being announced.

The two leaders greeted each other with a handshake and then boarded the same vehicle for the summit. Air Force One landed at the airbase at 10:30 local time (19:30), and the Ilyushin IL-90 landed about half an hour later.

Trump described the meeting as very productive but stated no agreement had been reached yet. Putin began his press conference by noting that the negotiations were conducted in a constructive atmosphere of mutual respect.

Key discussion points included the possibility of a ceasefire involving territorial adjustments, such as minor land swaps between Russia and Ukraine. Trump envisioned a framework agreement that would have Ukraine maintain sovereignty over most of its territory but accept Russia’s control over some parts.

Trump announced intentions to impose additional sanctions and tariffs on Russian oil imports if Putin did not agree to negotiations. However, Putin did not make significant concessions or agree to a ceasefire during the summit. Putin’s demands still reflected his maximalist war aims, including regime change in Kyiv and Ukraine’s demilitarization.

The meeting was marked by the conspicuous absence of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who was not invited. This caused concern in Europe and among NATO allies, fearing a side deal was being made without Ukraine’s involvement.

Putin gained a diplomatic advantage by meeting Trump on U.S. soil at a military base without having to make major compromises, which was seen as a symbolic win for Russia. The meeting was described as a "feel-out" meeting without immediate breakthroughs.

Despite both leaders describing the meeting as productive, no agreement was reached. The meeting between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin lasted from 11:30 local time (20:30 in Lisbon) until around 14:20 (23:20). On Ukraine, Putin recognized efforts by the Trump administration to try to resolve the situation, but warned that history must be taken into account.

On the Russian side, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and presidential diplomatic advisor Yuri Ushakov were present at the meeting. On the Washington side, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and special envoy Steve Witcoff were present. Putin invited Trump to a future summit in Moscow. The aim of the meeting was to discuss the war in Ukraine.
