The recent visit of Friedrich Mercer, German Chancellor, to the States wasn't exactly what he had hoped for. Instead, he found himself on the receiving end of a series of humiliations.

Trump, who welcomed Mercer in a luxurious guest house that has, in the past, been home to the likes of Elizabeth II, de Gaulle, and Churchill, blatantly refused to rally behind European sanctions against Russia.

Mercer's efforts to persuade Trump to reconsider his decision on increased tariffs on German (and European) exports to the States fell on deaf ears as well. The tariffs remain in place, and there seems to be no intention of reversing the decision.

During the joint press conference, Trump spoke for a whopping 40 minutes, while Mercer managed barely four. The majority of the press questions were directed at Trump, with only a handful aimed at Mercer.

When asked about sanctions against Russia, Trump compared the ongoing Ukraine-Russia conflict to a teenage brawl, stating: "Look, you've got two kids fighting on the street like crazy, you try to pull them apart, but they don't want to let go. Sometimes, for your own sake, it's better to let them fight a little longer before you pull them apart."

Mercer had hoped to discuss Russia's strikes on Ukraine, but Trump steered clear of the topic. According to Alexander Kotov, an expert at the Center for German Studies at the Institute of Europe of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Trump's casual comparison suggested a rejection of Zelensky and the EU's attempt to impose an immediate ceasefire.

As for the trade war, Trump hasn't made significant strides forward yet. For now, the situation remains in limbo, with the EU's tariff exemption due to expire on July 14. The potential outcomes could mirror the situation with China, or they could be even more severe - up to 50% on all trade between the US and the EU. Trump's intentions in this matter remain unclear.

Despite the setbacks, the media is still debating whether Merkel's gift to Trump, a copy of his German grandfather's birth certificate, was a wise move. Alexander Kotov, the same expert, questioned the tact, pointing out that Trump is known to emphasize his 100% American identity.

The distance between Trump and EU leaders remains as significant as ever.

In conclusion, Friedrich Mercer's visit to the States didn't yield the results he had hoped for. The discussions between him and Trump centered around geopolitical issues, but specific outcomes on sanctions or tariffs remain undisclosed. The overall outcome suggests a continued disconnect between the US and EU leaders.

  1. The German Chancellor's visit, involving discussions on war-and-conflicts, such as the Ukraine-Russia conflict, and policy-and-legislation, like sanctions and tariffs, resulted in inconclusive outcomes, signifying an ongoing disconnect between US and EU leaders.
  2. The ongoing migration of political ideas and strategies, highlighted by Trump's comparison of the Ukraine-Russia conflict to a teenage brawl, reflects the struggles of politics and general-news in bridging the divide between leaders, as western intervention remains uncertain.
  3. As policy-and-legislation debates continue, amidst setbacks in European-American relations, the future significance of migration, both in terms of political dynamics and economic trade, hangs heavily in the balance.
