Trump's departure from the UK concludes his second state visit, leaving behind a trail of intriguing political developments following his pageant-filled stay. Here are the major highlights.

The United States President Donald Trump concluded his second state visit to the UK, a trip marked by disagreements on several key issues, particularly those concerning Palestine and Ukraine.

During the visit, Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed his intention to recognise a Palestinian state, a stance that Trump does not support. This disagreement came after negotiations regarding a ceasefire in Ukraine, another contentious topic during the visit, ultimately ended without a deal being made.

Both the US and the UK are working to put pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin to agree to a Ukraine peace deal. Trump suggested that if the price of oil comes down, Putin will drop out of the conflict.

Amidst the political discourse, the war in Ukraine was a key discussion point. Trump's advisor suggested a strong approach to tackle the small boats crisis in the UK, similar to mass deportation raids in the US. In response, Sir Keir Starmer pointed to recent steps taken by his government, including the first return under the one-in, one-out deal with France.

However, the visit was not without its personal moments. There are photos of Trump and British politician Peter Mandelson together, including in the Oval Office. Mandelson, who served as a leading adviser to Prime Minister Tony Blair and held several cabinet posts, was appointed British ambassador to the United States in early 2025. He was dismissed from this post due to links with the convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

During Trump's visit to Britain, Mandelson had arranged the meeting between Trump and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Despite the Epstein-related controversy, Mandelson was no longer in his ambassadorial role at that time. Trump, when asked about Mandelson's links to Epstein, said he did not know him.

Lord Mandelson recalled a meeting with Trump where Trump said "God, you're a good-looking fellow, aren't you". The state of Palestine is already recognized by 147 of the UN's 193 member states. Despite this, the question of Palestinian statehood recognition remains a point of contention between Trump and Starmer.

In a surprising turn, Trump suggested using UK military to control illegal migration in the Channel. This proposal was met with uncertainty, as the UK continues to grapple with the small boats crisis.

As the visit concluded, it left a trail of unresolved issues, from the war in Ukraine to the recognition of Palestinian statehood, and the management of migration crises. The discourse between Trump and Starmer serves as a testament to the complexities of international diplomacy.
