Vladimir Putin, Russia's President, expressed gratitude towards US counterpart Donald Trump for proposing measures to end the raging conflict in Ukraine. In a recent press conference, Putin stated that Russia supports a pause in hostilities - yet this cessation should pave the way for a lasting peace. Concerning Trump's suggestion for a 30-day ceasefire, Putin raised concerns over the Ukrainian troops stationed in the Kursk region. Russia is eager to find a peaceful resolution, but questions remain regarding controlling the ceasefire proceedings.

Recall from Past: Russia's Warystance on Ceasefire Proposals

The skepticism surrounding Trump's 30-day truce proposal isn't entirely unexpected. Previously, there had been a hesitant attitude from the Russian leadership regarding similar cessation proposals for the Ukrainian conflict. As Yuri Ushakov, Putin's foreign policy advisor, pointed out on a Thursday briefing, such a fragile truce would only empower Ukraine's forces, allowing them to recuperate and renew their offensive. "It doesn't benefit us; it simply gives the Ukrainians an opportunity to regroup and continue as before," Ushakov explained.

Rather than settling for a temporary halt, Russia aims for a long-term agreement that addresses their "genuine" security concerns. Presently, US special envoy Steve Witkoff is in Moscow for negotiations.

  2. Recalling past instances, the Russian leadership has traditionally shown skepticism towards ceasefire proposals for the Ukrainian conflict, viewing a short-term truce as potentially empowering Ukraine's forces.
  3. The European Union, committed to the implementation of the Paris Agreement, is now observing the peace talks between the US special envoy, Steve Witkoff, and Russia, hoping for a long-term agreement addressing Russia's genuine security concerns in Ukraine.
